FUJAIRAH INTERNATIONAL ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITION (3rd Edition)

Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Hamad Crown Prince of the Emirate of Fujairah, Fujairah Fine Arts Academy releases Fujairah Arabic Calligraphy Competition Third Edition

Listed below are the rules and conditions for participating in the Fujairah International Arabic Calligraphy Competition, according to which the jury will evaluate the participating artworks.

1. Anyone may submit an Arabic Calligraphy Artwork and take part in this competition if they abide to the listed rules & conditions stipulated in this guide

2. The contestant may participate in all branches of the competition if they wish to, provided that only one artwork must be submitted in each branch of the competition, and if more than one artwork is submitted in one branch the participation shall be cancelled.

3. The Jury has the right to withhold awards if it deems that the participating works do not rise to the required level and/or do not comply with the competition rules that adheres to the Arabic Calligraphy Fundamentals.

4. Participants in this competition acknowledge that they have accepted the conditions stated in this guide.

5. Prize & award winning works become property of Fujairah Fine Arts Academy, and the Academy has the right to display these works in exhibitions and own copyrights.

6. Jury’s decisions are final and cannot be contested

The competition is held in three branches: the traditional branch - Ornamentation branch - Calligraffitti

Traditional Calligraphy

THULUTH JALI STYLE

Required Text

هُوَ الَّذِي يُنَزِّلُ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ لِّيُخْرِجَكُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُمْ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

1- The text below is required to be written in Thuluth Jali style

2- The contestant has complete freedom of choosing the appropriate template form to display the text, whether traditional templates or free formations as their layout, provided that they adhere to the ancient principles of Arabic calligraphy and do not deviate from the fundamental rules.

3- In order to stimulate the creativity of participating artists, we must inform you that the selection of artworks during the sorting and evaluation process depends merely on the ability of the participant to express the meanings behind the text and also on the extent of harmony between the composition and its meaning.

4- The contestant has the freedom to choose the size of the writing pen, and it is permissible to use more than one size.

5- The text must be written exclusively on Arabic Calligraphy marbled paper (Muqahhar), with measurements 50 x 70 cm.

6- The contestant is free to choose the color of the ink and can use one or more colors.

7- signing the artwork is permitted

8- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

9- It is permissible to write the Basmala (Optional)

JALI DIWANI STYLE

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

1- The thickness of the writing pen must be from 3 mm to 5 mm

2- Participants may use various sizes of pens as they wish

3- The contestant has the freedom to use the form of composition they find suitable, whether the classic form or a free form.

4- Any type of ink or colors can be used according to the contestant’s preference.

5- Participants can use the paper vertically or horizontally to execute their artwork.

6- It is required that the work submitted for the competition be new and not previously submitted for a competition / art event, nor be a copy of an artwork previously presented.

7- The painting shall be written exclusively on Arabic calligraphy paper (Muqqahar) only, with measurements 50 x 70 cm

8- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

9- It is permissible to write the Basmala (Optional)

NASKH STYLE

اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ(35) فِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا اسْمُهُ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ فِيهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ(36) رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ ۙ يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالْأَبْصَارُ(37) لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا وَيَزِيدَهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَرْزُقُ من يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ(38) وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَعْمَالُهُمْ مَن كَسَرَابٍ بِقِيعَةٍ يَحْسَبُهُ الظَّمْآنُ مَاءً حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَهُ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْئًا وَوَجَدَ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ فَوَفَّاهُ حِسَابَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ(39) أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُّجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا ۗ وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِن نُّورٍ(40) أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالطَّيْرُ صَافَّاتٍ ۖ كُلٌّ قَدْ عَلِمَ صَلَاتَهُ وَتَسْبِيحَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ(41) وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ الْمَصِيرُ(42) أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُزْجِي سَحَابًا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ رُكَامًا فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِهِ وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِن جِبَالٍ فِيهَا مِن بَرَدٍ فَيُصِيبُ بِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُ عَن مَّن يَشَاءُ ۖ يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرْقِهِ يَذْهَبُ بِالْأَبْصَارِ(43) يُقَلِّبُ اللَّهُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُولِي الْأَبْصَارِ(44)

1- The thickness of the writing pen must start from 0.7 mm at least.

2- Participants may use various sizes of pens as they wish.

3- Any type of ink or colors can be used according to the contestant’s preference.

4- Participants can use the paper vertically or horizontally to execute their artwork.

5- It is required that the work submitted for the competition be new and not previously submitted for a competition / art event, nor be a copy of an artwork previously presented.

6- The painting shall be written exclusively on Arabic calligraphy marbled paper (Muqqahar) only, with measurements 50 x 70 cm

7- Signing the artwork is permitted

8- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

9-It is permissible to write the Basmala (Optional)

10- It is permissible to write in script or spelling (optional)

NASTALIQ STYLE

رُزِقتَ أَسمَحَ ما في الناسِ مِن خُلُقٍ

إِذا رُزِقتَ اِلتِماسَ العُذرِ في الشِيَمِ

يا لائِمي في هَواهُ وَالهَوى قَدَرٌ

لَو شَفَّكَ الوَجدُ لَم تَعذِل وَلَم تَلُمِ

لَقَد أَنَلتُكَ أُذناً غَيرَ واعِيَةٍ

وَرُبَّ مُنتَصِتٍ وَالقَلبُ في صَمَمِ

يا ناعِسَ الطَرفِ لا ذُقتَ الهَوى أَبَداً

أَسهَرتَ مُضناكَ في حِفظِ الهَوى فَنَمِ

1- The thickness of the writing pen must start from 2.5 mm at least

2- Any type of ink or colors can be used according to the contestant’s preference.

3- Participants can use the paper vertically, horizontally or Jeleiba to execute their artwork.

4- It is required that the work submitted for the competition be new and not previously submitted for a competition / art event, nor be a copy of an artwork previously presented.

5- The painting shall be written exclusively on Arabic calligraphy paper (Muqqahar) only, with measurements 50 x 70 cm

6- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

Ornamentation Branch

The rules & conditions:

1. The dimensions of the used paper should be 60 x 60 cm

2 Ornamentation should occupy approximately 80% of the paper area.

3. The work is to be executed using authentic Islamic ornamentation style, leaving room for the artist to create innovative designs.

4. Original materials, colors, inks and real gold only must be used in the execution.

5. Shell Gold must be used in the right way.

6. You can be guided by the style of classical ornamentation prevailing in the sixteenth century.

7. Do not leave any spaces for writings, so that the final artwork is a stand-alone piece.

8. All types of paper are allowed.

9- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

CALLIGRAFFITTI

The theme of the competition this edition expresses ‘’light’’ (as a meaning or as one of the names of Allah Almighty)

1- Participating paintings must be original, not printed or copied.

2- The participant has the right to use any of the art movements/styles.

3- Submitted artwork must be at least 150 cm x 150 cm in size

4- Submitted artwork can be square or rectangular, provided that the shortest side of the rectangle be 120 cm at least

5- Submitted artworks should be presented on treated canvas

6- The participant is free to use any type of materials and colors to execute the painting.

7- Participants may choose from the texts of the Holy Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet, poetry, wisdom, or proverbs that are appropriate to add to their artwork.

8- The submitted artwork must be exclusive and have not previously been submitted or participated in any exhibition or art competition before.

9- Registration number must be written on the back of the submitted artwork

EVALUATION PRINCIPLES

The artwork submitted for the competition will be evaluated on the basis and rules of traditional Arabic calligraphy. Works that violate the concept of the correct phrase and do not consider the correct sequence of the text in the compositions, or include any spelling errors, will not be accepted. The dots must be taken into account; semicolon and letters must be in their correct positions. Paintings that do not comply with these conditions regardless of their artistic value shall be excluded from the competition.

Thuluth Jali Style

First Winner: 30,000 Dirhams

Second Winner: 25,000 Dirhams

Third Winner: 20,000 Dirhams
